"The ground on which an artist chooses to paint can dramatically effect the physical act of painting for the artist by way of application and by the way in which the viewer perceives a painting. Hannah Maxwell paints in Oil paint on Board. As opposed to the slightly soft textured warp and weft of canvas, board is a flat, smooth and a hard surface for an artist to paint on and is ideally suited to Hannah's paintings. Obviously the nature of board means that it doesn't relax or move under the pressure of the brush. This physicality helps to create and accentuate a smooth crisp, illustrative style and in turn perfectly reflects Hannah’s often strange and intriguing subject matter."
